Iomairt Ghàidhlig Loch Abair is a parternship between community and Gaelic organisations with the aim of increasing the numbers of Gaelic speakers in Lochaber as well as increasing opportunities to use Gaelic.  There is a local Steering Group with representation from throughout Lochaber and individuals committed to supporting and developing Gaelic are always welcome to get involved. We welcome anyone with an interest in Gaelic.

There are five Gaelic organisations involved in the Iomairt.

Comunn na Gàidhlig manages the Iomairt and employs a part-time officer to deliver aspects of the work plan and coordinate activity

Comann nam Pàrant supports the parental advisory scheme

Bòrd na Gàidhlig employs a full-time early years officer who also works in Lorne

Fèisean nan Gàidheal delivers relevant aspects of the work plan and employs a full-time officer who also supports local fèisean

Highland Council has a wide remit including Gaelic Medium education, early years, supports for parents, adult learning and some out of school activities.

Clì Gàidhlig supports the Iomairt by delivering some aspects of activity related to adult learning

Iomairt Gàidhlig Loch Abair (Lochaber Gaelic Initiative) has two aims:
1. To increase the numbers of people able to speak Gaelic
2. Increase and develop the opportunities to use Gaelic
The Iomairt brings together voluntary and public bodies alike as well as communities in order to grow the Gaelic Language in Lochaber. Lochaber has been identified as a priority area for language development. Iomairt Gàidhlig Loch Abair has a dedicated development officer.

Who is it for?
Anyone who has an interest in Gaelic and in Lochaber can get involved. In addition to growing Gaelic, we intend that Gaelic development will be a positive force for all aspects of life in Lochaber and benefit the entire population. Iomairt Gàidhlig Loch Abair will grow Gaelic to everyone's benefit.

What does the Iomairt do?
The Iomairt will identify and monitor the priorities for Gaelic development in Lochaber. Projects will be implemented that will directly impact on Gaelic according to these priorities and work towards the two aims above being achieved.

How will the Iomairt grow Gaelic in the area?
We will do this through the implementation of projects which support youth, training, parents, families and which support the expansion of Gaelic Medium Education at every level. We will also support increased visibility of Gaelic and address other priorities as appropriate.

Who makes the decisions?
General priorities are set by Bòrd na Gàidhlig and the local Steering Group advise on the best of implementing projects locally.

Can I get involved?
Yes you can! The Steering Group is open to anyone with an interest in Gaelic. We also welcome anyone able to speak Gaelic and/or with skills they would like to use in the support of Gaelic in Lochaber. Have a look at the website.
