Supporting young people with Gaelic and providing opportunities to use and learn the language is a priority for Iomairt Ghàidhlig Loch Abair. We work closely with the schools where Gaelic is taught and where young Gaelic speakers and learners are present. Through a strong network of Fèisean and youth activities we aim to support everyone with an interest in the language and provide a fun-filled programme for all.

Fèisean

The Fèis movement is very strong in Lochaber and well supported. Lochaber boasts a proud and strong tradition of supporting traditional music and drama through Gaelic and many young people have gone on to develop their skills and gain employment using the skills and contacts they made through Gaelic and fèisean. Fèisean nan Gàidheal are an active part of Iomairt Ghàidhlig Loch Abair with a full-time officer based in Camaghael Hostel. Further information available on the number above.

Gaelic medium John Muir Award in Lochaber

CoiseachdThe organisations of the Iomairt will be delivering the John Muir Award through the medium of Gaelic in the first half of 2012. This is pilot project where young people will be able to take part in Gaelic medium sessions based upon wild land in a chosen part of Lochaber and then meet up with young people from other Iomairtean areas who have been working on their own programmes.

In Lochaber, the JMA programme will see Gaelic speakers and learners learn about wild land through taking part in conservation activities as well as fun sessions based both inside and outside. At the end of the programme the young people will lead a short walk in their wild area where families can come and learn about that area in Gaelic.

In summary we expect it to be fun, dramatic, outside and inside, challenging and rewarding - all through the medium of Gaelic.  Contact CnaG on 01397-701988 for more details.
